“Meet the Parents” All-American BBQ

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

To celebrate the first meeting of Kathryn’s and Rob’s new extended family this patriotic feast meshes flavors from all over the world.

Burgers and hot dogs used to be the all-American meal. But that was a long time ago, before immigration changed the American culinary landscape. Here is a summer holiday menu as deliciously diverse as the country itself. It kicks off with a roasted vegetable and cheese antipasti served with crostini and pesto, firmly rooted in Italian cooking, and then moves on to a spicy Thai inspired grilled lobster. The grilled chicken glows with the flavors of Greece, the lime cilantro vinaigrette on the sweet potatoes and the jalapeno-lime butter served with the corn shows a certain Mexican and Spanish flair, and a cucumber, tomato, and pita salad has definite Middle Eastern inspiration. Even the dessert — an exotic and decadent chocolate layer cake — gets an Japanese accent from ginger, wasabi and black sesame seeds. Not long ago, these would have been considered "ethnic" dishes, but now they're a familiar part of our national pantry. So relax, have the sparklers ready for when the sun goes down, and enjoy one of the great benefits of living in a melting pot.
